Newcastle local businesses: a guide to what’s listed

WotsItCalled now lists 1,648 Newcastle businesses, most of them the sort people actually go looking for: the plumber, the garage, the dentist, the local. You can browse everything in Newcastle by category or by the part of the city you live in.
If you already know what you need, go straight to the Newcastle plumbers, car mechanics and garages in Newcastle and Newcastle dentists pages. Each shows the name, address and phone number for every business listed.
Which parts of Newcastle are covered
The listings lean north and west of the centre. Gosforth, Westerhope, Fenham, Lemington, Jesmond and Newburn all have plenty. Benwell, Byker, Kenton and Denton Burn turn up regularly too, and the city centre (NE1) turns up wherever you’d expect it to: pubs, hotels, solicitors and a few bakeries worth the walk.
A plumber in Westerhope will happily come out to Fenham or Kenton, but asking one to cross the river to Gateshead on a Friday afternoon is a different conversation. Pick someone from your side of town where you can, and ask about call-out charges if you can’t.
Trades and home repairs
This is where most people start, usually because something has stopped working.
- Plumbers and heating engineers: the Newcastle plumbers page has 37 listed, a lot of them boiler specialists. City Gas on Gretna Road (NE15) and Newcastle Heating and Plumbing in Cowgate are two to start with.
- Electricians: Newcastle electricians covers rewires, fuse boards, EV chargers and the odd dead socket. Tyneside Electrical Services is on St Cuthberts Road (NE5), and Great Park Electrical is in Newcastle Great Park.
- Builders and roofers: Newcastle builders includes a lot of roofing firms, which is useful with winter coming. R J Rowley Roofing is based in Spital Tongues.
- Locksmiths: Newcastle locksmiths for lockouts and lock changes. Key Fit Locksmiths Newcastle is based in NE5.
Cars, MOTs and tyres
The Newcastle car mechanics and garages page mixes independent garages with the national tyre and servicing chains. Fixmode Auto Services in Benwell, Fenham Garage Services on Hadrian Road and Swift Motor Engineering in Westerhope are all independents. The chains are there too, including several Kwik Fit branches, if you’d rather book online.
Dentists, barbers and vets
- Dentists: Newcastle dentists runs from NHS family practices to private implant clinics. Honour Health Dental is on Osborne Road in Jesmond and Gosforth Dental Surgery is on Gosforth High Street. Night and Day Emergency Dentist Newcastle on Westgate Road is worth knowing about before you need it.
- Hairdressers and barbers: Newcastle hairdressers and barbers, with a lot of the barbers clustered in the West End (NE4) and Westerhope. Gino barber in Denton Burn is one of them.
- Vets: Newcastle vets includes the PDSA Pet Hospital in Cowgate and Blythman & Partners Gosforth Veterinary Hospital.
Eating, drinking and somewhere to stay
Newcastle’s pub list is strong, which won’t surprise anyone. The Tyne Bar on Maling Street in Ouseburn and The Broad Chare near the Quayside are both listed. Further out, the big family pubs around Woolsington and Kenton Bank Foot are where half the city goes for Sunday dinner.
- Newcastle pubs and bars
- Newcastle restaurants, including Liosi’s Sicilian Cafe Bar
- Newcastle cafes and coffee shops
- Newcastle hotels and B&Bs, mostly clustered in the centre with a few out at Gosforth Park

Solicitors, accountants and the paperwork side
Conveyancing, wills and tax returns are dull, but somebody has to do them. Newcastle solicitors includes David Gray Solicitors in the Old County Court on Westgate Road and Mincoffs in Jesmond. Newcastle accountants covers sole traders and small limited companies, including Acumen Accounting on West Road in Fenham.
For either, ask for a fixed fee up front. Most small firms will give you one for a standard house purchase or a self-assessment return, and it saves an awkward invoice later.
Before you pick someone
Three habits that save grief later:
- Read the review count, not just the stars. A 5.0 from six reviews tells you less than a 4.7 from three hundred.
- Check the address. Some firms list a registered office rather than a yard or workshop. If they’re on the far side of the city, ask whether they cover your postcode.
- Ring two or three. For anything over a couple of hundred pounds, get more than one quote. It takes ten minutes and it usually pays for itself.
The short version
- There are 1,648 Newcastle businesses on WotsItCalled, strongest around Gosforth, Westerhope, Fenham and Jesmond.
- Start with plumbers, garages or dentists if you need someone this week.
- For a bigger job, get two or three quotes and check the firm covers your postcode.
