Finding a decent plumber in Liverpool

Liverpool’s got plenty of plumbers. The trick is picking one who turns up, charges what they said, and knows what they’re doing. Here’s how to actually tell the difference before you hand over a penny.

Work out what you actually need first

Half the hassle of finding a plumber starts because people ring round before they know what they’re asking for. Three different jobs, three different plumbers:

• Emergency leak or burst pipe – you need someone with a 24-hour call-out and a quick turnaround. Price comes second. Look for “emergency” in the listing and a phone number that actually gets answered.
• Boiler, gas, or hot water – you need someone Gas Safe registered. It’s a legal requirement, not a nice-to-have. Anyone touching gas without it is working outside the law, and your insurance will know about it if something goes wrong.
• Bathroom install or a big refit – this is project work. You want someone who’s done it before, can show you photos, and gives you a quote in writing that itemises labour, materials, and how long it’ll take.

Asking a bathroom fitter to come out at 11pm for a burst pipe is how you end up paying twice. Different jobs, different shortlist.

Five questions to ask before they start

Whoever you end up ringing, the conversation before they show up tells you most of what you need to know. Ask these five and pay attention to how they answer.

1. Are you Gas Safe registered? Only relevant for gas work – but if you’re even thinking about a boiler, the answer needs to be yes and they should happily give you their number. Cross-check it on the Gas Safe register.
2. Can you give me a written quote before any work starts? A decent plumber doesn’t guess on the phone and send a bill later. They’ll come out, look at the job, and write it down.
3. Is that quote fixed or is it an estimate? There’s a difference. Fixed means that’s the price unless the job changes. Estimate means “probably around that, could be more.” Know which one you’re agreeing to.
4. How do you charge for call-outs? Some charge a call-out fee on top of the hourly rate. Some fold it in. Some waive it if you go ahead with the work. All fine – as long as they tell you up front.
5. How soon can you get here, and how long will the job take? You’re not trying to trip them up. You’re trying to plan your week. Vague answers are a red flag.

What a good listing actually tells you

Before you ring round, a few minutes on a listing saves you a lot of time. Here’s what to look for:

• Reviews with specifics – “Steve fixed our boiler on a Sunday at 9pm” is worth more than “great service.” Look for the specific ones.
• A real address, not just a mobile number – not a dealbreaker for a sole trader, but a physical base tells you they’ve been around a while.
• Gas Safe number on the listing itself – if they’re proud of it, they’ll show it.
• Photos of actual work – boiler installs, bathroom refits, pipework. Anyone can take a photo of a van.
• How they reply to bad reviews – the really telling bit. A decent plumber responds calmly and explains. A dodgy one goes silent or starts an argument.
