Sheffield’s local business scene has a proper character to it. The steel city’s independent streak runs through the trades, the cafes, the salons – and most of the good ones don’t need to advertise because word-of-mouth still works here.

Around 480 Sheffield businesses are currently listed on WotsItCalled, with strong concentrations in Stocksbridge, the city centre, Totley, Nether Edge, Dore and Deepcar. That’s everything listed in Sheffield pulled together in one place.

The local trades you’ll actually need

Sheffield’s trades scene reflects the city’s geography – the Stocksbridge area has a surprisingly dense concentration of firms, and the south-west suburbs (Totley, Dore, Nether Edge) are full of sole traders who’ve been covering the same streets for years. Plenty of old-school craftsmanship alongside the newer outfits.

Sheffield trades have a reputation for being straight with pricing and generous with advice – a lot of the best-reviewed firms will tell you honestly whether a job is worth doing, or whether you’d be better leaving it alone. That’s more common here than in some cities, and worth trusting when you get it.

  • Plumbers18 Sheffield plumbers listed. SmartFlow Services in Nether Edge covers both water supply and domestic plumbing.
  • Electricians20 Sheffield electricians, the largest trades category. Smart Electricians Ltd in Lowfield picks up strong reviews.
  • Car mechanicsSheffield garages. Ecclesall Garage Ltd and Victoria Motors Stocksbridge both sit in the five-star range for servicing and MOTs.
  • BuildersSheffield builders. Unity Development Group in Bents Green is a solid option for new-build and renovation.

If you’re out in Hillsborough, Wincobank or Woodseats, most Sheffield firms will travel. The hilly geography means travel times are often longer than the distance suggests – ask when booking.

Where to eat, drink, and grab a coffee

Sheffield’s food scene is more interesting than people give it credit for. Kelham Island gets the coverage, but the directory picks up cafes in Wharncliffe Side, Hillsborough, Totley – the places actual Sheffielders go. Pubs are well represented too, including some of the best micropubs in the north.

Kelham Island and the city centre get the coverage, but the real everyday Sheffield eating scene is in the suburbs. Hillsborough, Sharrow, Nether Edge and Ecclesall all have proper neighbourhood cafes and pubs that are worth the trip if you’re in the area.

Hair, beauty, health, and wellbeing

Sheffield’s hair and beauty scene is heavy on the personal service end. Stocksbridge, Fulwood and Nether Edge all have strong independents, and the dentist coverage is better than you’d expect for the size of the city. Multiple gyms to pick from, from big chains to small PT studios.

Sheffield dentists split fairly evenly between NHS and private, and the private clinics in Broomhall and Fulwood cover implants and cosmetic work at reasonable prices compared to the nearby cities. Worth getting a second opinion on big treatment plans – most clinics offer free consultations.

  • Hairdressers and barbersSheffield salons and barbers. Yvonnes in Stocksbridge and Totley Barber both pick up strong local reviews.
  • Beauty salonsSheffield beauty salons. The Beauty Retreat Organic Day Spa in Fulwood is one of the top-rated.
  • DentistsSheffield dentists. ConfiDental in Broomhall covers implants and cosmetic work.
  • GymsSheffield gyms including Vision Fit in Stocksbridge and The Gym Group Sheffield Heeley.

Professional services

Sheffield has enough solicitors and accountants for most needs, and they’re spread around the city rather than bunched in the centre. Stocksbridge in particular has a surprising number of professional services for its size. Estate agents cover the city end-to-end.

Sheffield accountants tend to be particularly strong on small-business and self-employed work. Several of the listed firms offer fixed-fee packages specifically for sole traders and small limited companies, which is often cheaper than the hourly alternative.

What’s changed lately

Sheffield’s local scene has grown quietly but steadily. Kelham Island and Neepsend get the headlines, but Stocksbridge, Hillsborough and the Ecclesall stretch have all picked up new independents across food, beauty and trades. The Peak District commuter villages on the city’s edges have their own growing clusters too.

New Sheffield listings are added to the directory each week – often at the suggestion of local customers. If you know a Sheffield business that isn’t on here yet, let us know and it’ll get added. No signup, no fee, no catch.
