1. When were the most recent reviews written? Restaurants change. A 4.7 average from three years ago with nothing recent is a warning, not a reassurance. Read the last ten reviews, not the top ten.
2. Does the menu match what you want tonight? Sounds obvious. You’d be amazed how many times people book on vibes and then find out the menu is three pages of pizza when they wanted proper Italian.
3. What’s the booking situation? Walk-in only, online booking, phone only, or fully booked for three weeks. Know before you turn up.
4. What do reviews say about service? Good food with bad service is a bad night out. Reviews that mention staff by name, “Steve looked after us all night”, beat generic 5-stars.
5. Allergies and dietary stuff: ring ahead, don’t just hope. A decent restaurant welcomes the call. One that brushes you off on the phone will brush you off on the night.

• A real website or menu link: anyone serious has one. It doesn’t need to be fancy.
