Five things to check before you book

A bit of reading beforehand can save a disappointing Saturday night.

1. When were the most recent reviews written? Restaurants change. A 4.7 average from three years ago with nothing recent is a warning, not a reassurance, so read the latest ten reviews rather than the top ten.
2. Does the menu match what you want tonight? It sounds obvious, but plenty of people book on atmosphere and then find three pages of pizza when they wanted proper Italian.
3. What’s the booking situation? Walk-in only, online, phone only, or booked solid for three weeks: find out before you turn up.
4. What do reviews say about service? Good food with bad service still makes a bad night out. A review like “Steve looked after us all night” is worth more than a generic five stars.
5. Allergies and dietary stuff: ring ahead rather than hoping. A decent restaurant is glad you called, and one that brushes you off on the phone will brush you off on the night.

What a good listing actually tells you

A listing does a lot of the work if you know where to look:

• Specific reviews, not generic praise: “the butter chicken is unreal” tells you something, “amazing food” doesn’t.
• Recent photos from actual customers: these show you more than the polished menu shots from the restaurant’s own marketing.
• Response to bad reviews: a decent restaurant explains and a bad one gets defensive. One reply is usually enough to tell which.
• Opening hours that match your plan: some places shut early on Sundays or stop serving at 9, which you’ll want to know before you trek across town.
• A real website or menu link: anyone serious has one, even if it’s nothing fancy.
