Warrington solicitors: what you need to know

Needing a solicitor is rarely the best part of anyone’s week, and the last thing you want is another hour ringing firms that don’t do what you need. Warrington has plenty of them. Here’s how to pick one who’ll get on with it.
There are 19 solicitors and legal services listed across Warrington on WotsItCalled, in Stockton Heath, Birchwood and the town centre. Some are high-street generalists, some specialise in one area, and a few are larger firms with a department for everything. Which ones belong on your shortlist depends on the job.
Work out what you actually need first
“I need a solicitor” tells a firm about as much as “I need a doctor” tells a receptionist. Pin down the type of matter and the rest gets easier.
- Conveyancing, buying or selling a house: most firms have this down to a routine. Compare price, turnaround and how well they communicate. The cheapest usually isn’t the best, and a good conveyancer against a bad one can mean weeks off your completion date.
- Wills, probate, power of attorney: a small job with big consequences. You want someone clear and patient who’s open about fees. Ask for a fixed price up front, as many firms quote a flat fee for a standard will.
- Family, divorce, children, financial settlement: this needs a family-law specialist, not a conveyancer dabbling. Resolution membership is a quick filter.
- Personal injury: usually “no win no fee” these days. Read the agreement properly before you sign, because the percentage a firm takes from any settlement varies a lot.
- Employment, dispute resolution, commercial: each is its own specialism. Don’t ring a high-street generalist about a complicated employment tribunal.
Be specific on the first call. “I’m selling my flat in Warrington and need a conveyancer, when could you start?” gets you much further than “do you do house stuff?”
Five questions to ask before you instruct
Ask these before you hand over any money or sign a client care letter.
- Are you regulated by the SRA? Every proper solicitor is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Find the firm’s SRA number on its website or ask for it. “Legal services” is an unprotected term, but “solicitor” is protected.
- Who’ll actually be handling my case? Partners win the work and juniors often do it. That’s fine if the balance is right, but you want to know who picks up the phone when you need an update.
- Is the fee fixed, hourly or contingent? Fixed fees suit standard work, hourly rates make sense for complex matters, and contingent (no win no fee) is mostly for personal injury. Know which one you’ve agreed to.
- What are the likely disbursements on top of your fee? Searches, Land Registry fees, counsel’s fees and court fees add up and catch people out. A good firm lists them in the quote.
- How will you keep me updated? It might be a weekly email, a phone call when you ask, or a client portal. A lot of complaints about solicitors come down to “nobody told me what was happening”, so agree on it at the start.

What a good listing actually tells you
The listing and the firm’s own site should answer most of your questions before you pick up the phone.
- Clear practice areas: good firms say exactly what they do and don’t do. A vague listing tends to mean vague service.
- Named solicitors with their specialisms: real names, rather than just “the team”, tell you who you’ll be dealing with.
- Fee information: conveyancing fees, will costs, first consultation rates. The SRA expects firms to publish these now, and good ones don’t mind.
- Reviews that describe the process: “kept me updated throughout the sale, chased the other side when things stalled” is worth far more than a star rating.
- SRA ID on the website: it’s required, and it takes a minute to check on the SRA register.
