Nottingham dentists: picking one that’s worth it

Nottingham’s dentists are a mixed bag. Some still take NHS patients, most don’t, and a few are fully private cosmetic clinics charging city-centre prices. Whether you want a routine check-up or a full smile overhaul, it pays to know which kind you’re ringing.

There are 107 dental practices listed across Nottingham on WotsItCalled, in Bulwell, Sneinton, Wollaton and the city centre. They range from long-standing NHS-funded practices to private cosmetic clinics and a few specialists doing implants or periodontics.

Work out what you actually need first

“I need a dentist” covers a lot, and pinning it down early stops you ringing practices that can’t help:

  • A routine NHS check-up and basic treatment. Practices taking new NHS patients are hard to find in Nottingham, so when you find one, register straight away, even if nothing hurts yet.
  • A private check-up and fillings. Much easier to find. Expect £45-£90 for a check-up depending on the practice, and check whether that includes a hygienist visit.
  • Cosmetic work such as whitening, veneers or Invisalign. This is a specialism, so look for a practice that lists cosmetic work openly, shows before-and-afters and offers a consultation before anything is agreed.
  • An emergency: a broken tooth, an abscess, a lost filling. Ring the nearest practice first, then 111 if they can’t see you. Many practices keep emergency slots each day for existing patients, and some take emergency walk-ins.

A cosmetic-only clinic won’t do you a cheap check-up, and a periodontics specialist isn’t the place for a whitening quote.

Five questions to ask before you register

Ask each of these on the phone before you book in.

  1. Are you taking NHS patients, or private only? Ask it straight out, because the answer changes the whole conversation. A good practice won’t dodge it.
  2. What does a check-up cost, and what does a hygienist visit cost? Get both figures. Some practices price the check-up low, then steer you into a £70 hygienist slot straight after.
  3. Do you write a full treatment plan before starting anything? The answer should be yes, in writing, with prices. A dentist who shrugs and says “we’ll see how it goes” is setting you up for a surprise bill.
  4. Can I choose whether to have X-rays today? X-rays are standard for a new patient, but at a six-monthly check-up you’re entitled to say no, and a good practice respects that.
  5. Will I see a dentist or a therapist? Dental therapists are qualified for plenty of treatments, but for some things you’ll want the named dentist, so find out which you’re booked with.

What a good listing actually tells you

Five minutes on the listing and the practice website will answer most of your questions. Check for:

  • NHS or private, clearly stated. If you have to dig for it, assume private.
  • A published price list. Good practices put their private fees up front, and hidden prices nearly always mean a surprise on the bill.
  • Reviews that name the dentist. “Dr Khan talked me through the crown and it was painless” beats “lovely practice” every time.
  • GDC numbers. Every UK dentist has one, and the good practices put them on the staff page.
  • How they handle complaints. Their replies to bad reviews tell you more than a pile of good ones.

Nottingham dentists worth a look

These practices are already on WotsItCalled, across different neighbourhoods and with different specialities. Check the reviews, then ring round:

If none of those fit, the full list is on the Nottingham dentists category page, and the national dentist directory covers practices across the UK.

The short version

  • Ask whether it’s NHS or private before anything else.
  • Get a written treatment plan with prices before any work starts.
  • Price the check-up and the hygienist separately.
  • Trust reviews that name the dentist over ones about the waiting room.
  • If an NHS practice is taking new patients, register immediately, because those lists don’t stay open long.
